I’ve been researching, discovering, and implementing innovative management techniques for companies. During the last 28 years, I’ve built teams of professionals that have transformed large and traditional corporations into fast fresh and creative companies. We measure the impact of innovation on the EBITDA of the company. In my 12 years of experience as a keynote speaker, I’ve spoken to audiences in the business realm in more than 20 countries. I inspire business leaders and their teams to innovate with a high impact in company growth, profitability, and sustainability. It´s about how innovation management really works in large companies.
59 years ago, I was born in Valparaiso, Chile. In 1963, I studied in a school that taught almost everything in German. For many years I adapted to the German culture of curiosity, discipline, arts appreciation, and a desire to understand things profoundly. Later on, I studied electrical engineering at Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María in Chile.
In 1986, I set out on this journey of science, technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship. I decided to build in Chile what I now call the Discipline Of Innovation. I got the profound belief that innovation was sort of the Holy Grail for developing companies, cities and nations. Innovation not only creates new products and services, but also creates a new demand and entirely new markets, employment, and a better living and working for us, the people.
I also believe that innovation is a "discipline", and therefore it could be learned and taught, but only by making it happen.
Since 1986 I´ve dedicated myself to lifelong research about the concepts, methods, and beliefs that make innovation happen in large companies. In 2010, I began a new research focus: How does innovation and exponential growth happen in digital markets, mainly created by high tech startups? Since 2014, I´ve been visiting and intensely exploring the mysteries of how to connect the dots of large corporations’ innovation and world class science and technology research centers´ emerging technology. In that endeavor, I´ve been scouting research labs in Chile, China, Germany, Israel, Japan, and the U.S.
Founder & practitiones
In 1989, I began to put my beliefs, concepts, and methods of the Innovation Discipline in practice by co-founding a company dedicated to accelerate innovation in large corporations (www.innspiral.com). We built a team of young professionals dedicated to intensify innovation in corporations. How do we do it? By creating value for customers and users through new products, services, processes, and business models that represent a significant increase of EBITDA for the shareholders. We measure and evaluate what is essential for company growth. We´ve been working with corporations for years to increase a KPI that we call "I3", Innovation Intensity Index" (% of total EBITDA coming from innovations the company created and launched during the last 5 years). We´ve been able to raise I3 of numerous companies from less than 5% to more than 15% in less than 3 years. Some of them began at 0% and reached 40%! It´s amazing to see how innovation begins to flourish in large companies once it’s instilled.
The Innovation Club.
In 2004 I discovered that collaboration was a key cultural habit to accelerate innovation. I founded The Innovation Club, a membership company that connects business leaders and leading researchers to accelerate innovations in corporations. We began in 2004 with 4 associates and now collaborate with more than 60 corporations, research centers, and universities.
In 2011 I founded a third company to put the Exponential Growth of Digital Startups in practice. Magical Startups is a high technology based startups accelerator. We provide startups with seed capital and guide them in creating superior products and business models that deliver high value and double digit sales increases in less than one year. We now run an acceleration portfolio of more than 20 startups.
I have been successfully speaking to business audiences, generally attended by shareholders, directors, CEOs and vice presidents of large companies since 2002. It’s a real challenge! The key is real practical content. I also deliver in a very entertaining way. Since I only have about 30 or 60 minutes for anywhere between 100 and 1,000 very busy people, I have to get straight to the point and still provide the most usefull takeaways. I´ve been a keynote speaker for more than 300 conferences on innovation and entrepreneurship key issues in Argentina, Brasil, Chile, China, Colombia, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, South Korea, and Venezuela.
Some companies that have hired me to speak are: Angloamerican Copper, BBVA, Bradesco, Britanite, Clariant, Copec, ENAEX, ENEL, ING, MetLife, MGI Worldwide, Microsoft, Oracle, Santander Bank, Sodimac, SURA and Xerox, among others. I speak about what my customers and I have achieved and what really works!
Above all, I love my family; Maggie, my wife and my friend I met at 15; my kids: Iván Jr. (35, designer); Marcela (32, designer); Fernando (25, musician) and Vicente (15, a student in high school).
I love classical music from Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart, Rachmaninov, Vivaldi, among others. I started playing piano two years ago and am already playing some simple pieces form Bach and Chopin. I also absolutely love the Beatles, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Sones, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd.
